One wire alternator

Building a wd power unit, and would like to get a charging system up and running. As of now, I just use a garden tractor battery, and put a charger on it after each use. The only wires I have, are a "coil wire to starter terminal," and "starter to battery." (And Neg. ground to frame) I have looked at the archives about the older chevy alts. and all the wiring diagrams show the use of an amp gage. Don't need one, just want a basic charge. Does anyone have a source for a true "one wire alt.?" From what I've read, it connects alt. to battery only. (Trying to keep it simple) Archives said JC Whitney would have one, but the page runs in circles.

Cheapest way is to get one for an old chevy about $35. Hook a wire from the F terminal of the regulator to the battery lug of the alt.then run a wire from the battery post to the battery terminal on the alt. you may have to throttle the engine up to get it to start charging. Any one wire you use will have to have a diode or the coil will feed off of it and the engine will stay running after you turn the key off

Just just got a new one-wire 10si from Weitzel's D.C. Electric, Norwalk, Ohio 419-668-2844 (sells under the ebay store name triodiode). I think it was $81 and came quick. Looks great, haven't installed it yet. Like yourself I just want to charge the battery with no frills, my diesel doesn't really care otherwise.

They are sold right here on this site. The P/N is 8NE10305SE and are priced at $68. The pulley may not fit your application , check and see if you need to keep your old one .The store is at the top of the page, .

In addition to a wire from key thru diode to #1 spade, a wire from #2 spade to charge lug helps, as you are dealing with a 3 wire job.. Should start at about 400rpm

A 3 wire will work better and be cheaper and if you have a local O'Reilly's auto parts store they come wit ha life time warranty. No amp gauge needed. You hook the charge wire to the battery. Then the little plug has 2 wires the #2 wire goes to the charge stud on the alternator and the other wire the #1 goes to the ignition side of the coil with a diode or light bulb or even a ballast resister

If there is an alternator/starter shop in your area, they should be able to fix you up. I know in my area, it will run around $60.

Delco 10SI series alternator has an internal regulator. A one wire configuration has only an output connection, there is no connection to an external regulator

It is the 3 wire Delco, not the 1 wire that requires the diode or indicator light to prevent run on when switch is turned off
