what did it represent

Agree with what the others have said. If you ever spent much time on a "WD" and then jumped on the new "WD-45", it was simply amazing the power difference between the two.

That has been largely discussed, and never proved with a definitive answer. Just lots of speculation.

I have owned both and still have a WD45 and also have a W Speed Patrol which uses the same engine as the WC/WD so I know them both very well

Maybe it was for "45 Degree Angle", if the Plowing got tough enough...!!!

You have to deal with a floating front end a lot with a WD-45 when the going gets tough, not so much with a WD..!!

Ron..

I do not know about the 45 name, but they are great old tractors.

Nothing sounds better than an old wd45 pulling a new holland baler down in a bottom field,

You can hear those governors open each time that old baler ram hit.
Nice sound,

Wd45 has a very sensitive governor

In the Nebraska test facility the WD45 was tested 4 different times using gas, distillate, LPG and diesel. Of all the tests the LPG rated the highest at 44.13 so the WD45 was never officially a 45 hp tractor but the 45 does stand for 4.5" stroke.

i own a WD , have ran a WD45 too , both have plenty of power when you consider niether one will put it to the ground , just spins & tears things up in the field , trys to kill ya sliding around every chance it can , call mine hitler , wouldn't tell anyone to buy one , but ya 45 HP was the intention there

Those tractors came from the factory with fluid in the rear tires, which was 800 to 900 pounds extra weight at the point of pull. They also performed the best when using mounted implements and utilizing the patented Traction-Booster system to help add even more weight to the rear wheels when doing heavy work. Sounds to me like you were without fluid or are trying to compare them to the more expensive (and heavier) Farmalls and Deere tractors. Hook that 3-bottom pull type plow on an IH "M" and I'll bring my WD-45 with a mounted plow and we'll see who plows the most in a day.
