D19 Steering

Back on my buddy's D19. He's got a lot of slop in the steering. Steering wheel will rotate 180deg before moving wheels. Say universal joints are good, does the steering gear have any adjustment? He's going to get a SM, just hasn't done it yet.

Thanks for your response.

I don't remember off hand if there is an adj or not I'd have have to look thru my service manual but first thing I'd do is check the tie rod ends inner and outer and check the arm on bottom of steering unit to make sure it is tight it may have splines worn out or nut on bottom loose.

If that's like the smaller D series, it would have a hex/spline/socket kind of joint just to the rear of the steering gear. As that is a power assist system, I can't imagine where there could be that kind of slop, and it working at all. I can't picture that joint being capable of that either, but that's where I would start.

180 degrees ?? I'd be sure there isn't a ton of slop in the u-joint at the bellhousing. Not the joint itself, but where the joint connects to the shaft that goes forward. The shaft hole may be worn and U-joint wobbling on the shaft. Next, I'd suspect the stake nut has backed off inside on the worm gear shaft. When that happens, the power steering effort isn't very good and you don't say anything about that. Then, on a wide front end, there's the tie rods swing arm and it's splines. I usually replace the shaft seal and then weld the arm to the shaft on the bottom, so if you ever need to remove the arm again, you grind off the weld.

I will second what DrAllis said about the steering shaft yoke for ujoint, i thought about that later after my first post, the hole in the shaft maybe worn out or it could be the pin that goes thru it, had that on my 17 replaced the pin made a big difference. Could be a combination of all the above, main thing is check it good before jumping in and buying parts that you may not need.
