185 shifter

Evening . Have a 185 I posted about last
fall . Took the top cover off because of
possible 1st gear issue and there is one
, anyway having trouble getting the plate
lined up right . I plan on taking it to a
buddies shop so I need to reinstall it .
I can get it all the way down but it's a
half inch off towards the rear end . Any
tricks or advice would be appreciated . I
do have a shop and parts manual , thanks.

Look at the position of the reverse idler/gear when everything is in neutral. I remember a tractor model where the fork for reverse couldn't be placed into the collar when in neutral. The collar and the shifter had to be in reverse for everything to drop into place. I can't remember for sure if it was a 180/185 trans, but it wouldn't hurt to look at at from that perspective.

Gently put the shifter in 2nd gear, reach down in the trans, and slide second gear into place, replace the shifter top.

Thanks but that's what I did and for some reason it's not lining up . Manual says put it in 2nd gear to remove the cover. I'm gonna have another pair of eyes look at it this weekend.
