190 XT series?

How do I tell what series 190xt I have? I've heard reference to the series III tractor and that it has a better rear end and such but how can I tell if I have a series III? Are there a series I & II as well?

Is it based on serial number? Year?
My tractor is à 1970 190XT
Serial #:26539

How do you tell by serial number? is it just above a certain number are III's? Did they make a series I & II or were those just referred to as 190XT's

All are called XT190 but the later ones where refereed to be a series. Do not know which are which by serial number but that is how one tells which is which. I know the XT190 I have on my shop right now is the series 1 and i was made in 1965 and is a gas one to boot

The series II and III's had no bars across the grill and flat top fenders similar to a IH. They also had larger axels and 4 pinion differentials. The first ones were called the bar-grills and had fenders that kinda ran to the platform on the front. They had a 2 pinion diff and smaller rear axels and were more prone to rear end problems....Ron

Serial number 23001 and up are officially a Series 3. Many older units failed the 2-pinion differential during their lifetime and were repaired with the 4-pinion Series 3 parts. The larger axle (3 1/4" ) was effective at s/n 9001 and up, which was long before the Series 2 or 3.

Regardless, it's advisable not to shift up or down, with the power director under full load, that 301 diesel will cream 4 pinion diff in a heartbeat.

Generally, differential failures used to be related to moldboard plowing and the land wheel slipping all the time. Using the PD clutch under full load isn't a great idea but, that's kind of what it was designed for.

That's kind of what it was designed for, when it wont pull the load in 5th gear and you pull that power director back into 3rd, it's going to go into neutral before it goes into 3rd, there's a tremendous shock load there, going into that pinion bearings that they never took into account, especially when it's putting out a 122 hp, and 4, 18.4 x 34 deep tread duals. But it's your tractor.

Yup, 93.64 rated HP but running 122 HP......that just may have had a lot to do with rear end failures !!!
