My new 190XT

Hello everybody, i purchased a new tractor yesterday and had some questions for all you AC experts out there. I got a AC 190XT Diesel, my first question pertains to the ether start mechanism that came on these tractors, i was given the piece and cover with the tractor but it is not mounted so I have no idea where it goes or how it works to hook it up, there is a pipe plug in the intake heater housing that I'm assuming that's where the line gets plumbed into?
My next question is about the intake heater? Is there anyway to test it, ohm it out with a meter? Is it automatic or is there a button to push to use the intake heater?

Your intake heater works by turning and holding the key switch if I remember right, that's how my 7000 is anyway. Make sure it works by holding on 30-45 seconds, you should be able to feel the manifold getting warm by hand at the heater area. Mine has either assist too but I never use it, and don't use both! I have the best luck with the block heater on a timer..

Thank you very much, I'll have to try that, cause it is very hard to start, I mean it was in the 50's yesterday and after hauling it home I had to ether it to start, I'm going to check the injection timing and make sure that's right cause it seems to me that even without any starting aid it should start in 50 degree weather, I'm a diesel mechanic by trade so I'm looking forward to tinkering with it.

So I hold the key to the "start position" and let it warm awhile and then hit the button? I did notice when your turn the keyes past "on" you hear a little click, almost like a solenoid activating

My 7000 is a bit worn and tired, and it won't cold start in the 62 degree shop without help, but runs fine warmed up. 190XT had no timing advance on the injection pump like the later 200 did, so get used to using the heater for cold starts..

Oh ok, we'll thank you I'll keep that in mind, do you know where that ether start mechanism mounts at? And does it just plumb into the heater manifold with like a nylon spaghetti line? I can take a pic of what I'm working with later if you want.

yep, I would much rather use the heater then either as well and I actually went out this morning before I left the house and tested the heater like you said to and it works the manifold got warmso as soon as I get home in a little while I'm going to try it out and see how well it starts with the heater since it's still kind of cool here I would imagine it's going to fire right off

Remember there is nothing like good cranking speed to help
start a Diesel. Good batteries, good cables and nice clean
and tight connections.

Little story to tell you, I have a 190 diesel also, I was out discing and noticed that my amp gauge was charging way toward the high side and I thought maybe I had a bad battery and would check it after I had dinner. So I pulled up by the fuel barrels so I could fill up when I came back out, half an hour later I came out and smoke was rolling out from under the hood, I hurried up and got the battery cable disconnected, I looked under the hood and the cables going to the manifold heater were melted and the amp gauge and wire going to it was fried. The solenoid had stuck in the on position. So I put an Idiot light on the instrument panel and hooked it so it would come on whenever the manifold heater was energized, something you might consider doing, I could have lost my tractor and who knows what else if the fuel tanks would have caught on fire. Now whenever I use the manifold heat the light comes on and when I release the key the light goes off and I have peace of mind. Gene

good to know I'll keep that in mind, does anybody know what kind of hydraulic oil I should use in this tractor I have a bucket cylinder leaking and I took it off to rebuild it so I'm going to need to stop the hydraulic oil off but I don't know what kind to use or even where I fI'll it, is it the dipstick on the floor by the shifter linkage?

I will repeat what tramway said, good heavy cables,
good batteries make a lot of difference on these
tractors. I run two 1000 CCA batteries on mine. The
190 is not much for cold weather anyway so don't be
surprised if you have to preheat on a 60-65* day.
The either button that was on our series III was
mounted to bottom of the dash, it was a small plate
with the button that used one of the lower dash
bolts. If I remember correctly it did plumb in to
the side of the intake.

Remember what Dieseltech said about NOT combining ether with a glow plug or manifold preheater. NEVER combine the two. Last winter when was super cold all winter, I had problems firing up my Deere 4520 because it was cold. I was using the glow plug and not having any success. I then gave it a shot of ether. Guess what happened when the ether reached the hot or warm glow plug? It ignited in the intake manifold and started burning out the filter stack. I snuffed it quick enough, but lesson learned...never ever combine the two. No harm done, I snuffed it out quick enough and thankfully had no leaks to keep drawing air to feed the fire.
