Instrument Box for Allis Chalmers C

Still working on my 1942 Allis Chalmers C. I took the instrument box off and it is all rusted on the inside. I got the magneto switch out, but light switch looks like it is riveted or welded to the box. Do I just grind it out with a Dremel tool or is there some trick to it that is not obvious to me?

I have gotten a couple of new switches from Steiner and hope they work.

Thanks in advance.

The light switch has a nut on the shaft collar and a 10/24 stove bolt through the face of the switch box with a nut on the inside. They can be a bear to get off. The knob soesn't come off of the shaft. Don't ask me how I know. I was able to buy a "light" knob that was threaded and put a thrad on the shaft.
Replacement boxes are not too hard to find in tractor junk yards or on ebay. Just remember that both the mag and light switch requie a GOOD ground to operate. Steiners replacement light switches are slightly larger the the original and are hard to get into the box.LOL Bob

The original light switch (made by Delco) may be taken apart and cleaned up. Use a #2 pencil eraser to clean the contacts. The Case VAC used the same switch, but the lighting leads were attached so that the 1st position out was "HIGH" charge, and the 2nd position out was "HIGH" charge and lights. The AC applications had the lights on in the 1st position out. A replacement resistor is available.
When using the Cole Hersee light switch or the Chinese copy, the light switch hole in the box cover can be filled in and redrilled further from the side of the cover for more clearance. It is also sometimes necessary to bend the wire connection tabs on the switch to more of a right angle, and install the screws so that the heads are away from the cover. It is easier to install the leads onto the switch before the switch is installed into the cover.
