D-17 Tractor

Looking at a D-17 tractor, not sure what series. It was running a year ago, rear main seal leaks and possible head gasket? Wide front and decent rear tires. Has no fenders or 3pt hitch. Is this tractor worth $800? I know the gas engines in these were good because I had a gleaner E. Thanks in advance.

Unless its a series 4, you won't have live hyd, the rear main seal is costly to replace, unless you do it yourself. Does it have power steering, have you checked to see if the power director works, and if it jumps out of any gears, but for $800, you can afford to fix some things.

At that price real hard to say if it is a deal or not. One that is not running and you do not know for sure what is wrong at best is around what ever scrap price is since they can be a money pit in a heart beat. That all said I have a D-17 that we pulled out of a fence row not running and it purrs like a kitten now. Took a bit to get running but when I did get it running it has run good since. I built my own 3 point on it since it is a series 1

I can do all mechanic work myself. Just curious on what these tractors are valued at in good used conditions. Looking for a fixer upper project.

Check the Power Director (hand clutch). It should snap briskly as you activate the lever, otherwise the Hi-Lo clutches may be worn out. Doesn"t have to be running to check that out.

Around the midwest it seems sellers on craigslist and such think 3k to 3.5k is a good starting point. I don't know of people buying at those prices.

Does it have the lift arms? No fenders isn't horrible to fix. If the rear rims are good and the engine is loose, I'd say $800 isn't bad. I've been looking for a D17 and haven't found a running one for under 2 grand. I'd go for an $800 project D17 in a heartbeat.
