51 B Front Main

For those who have replaced the front main crank seal on a B I was just wandering what all was involved. I realize pulling off the tin and front end but was just wandering like what it takes to get the pulley off and if there is anything particularly difficult. Going to get after mine in the next week or two. Thanks.

The front pulley will break easy if you are not careful. After removing the lock screw on the hub you need to pull even on the hub. I like to use a bearing splitter to even the pull. I have bought tractors that someone had drilled and taped two holes in the hub to use bolts to pull on. I have used them when they are present but never drilled and taped them myself. If the pulley does not move with moderate pressure I put heat on the hub back by the seal to expand the hub while applying pressure on the puller. No damage will be done with fire on the hub except to the seal that you will be replacing.

Thank you very much for your time, that is exactly the kind of information that I was hoping to find out before I tackled mine.

I took the balancer pulley, off my 52B, and bought every gear puller that HF sold, and still had to heat with the torch. It was worth it though, I machined the crank lugs off, my pulley, and drilled and tapped it for a 3/4" shaft, which sticks thru the old crank hole, and runs a gear pump from northern. Live hydraulics are great!

The front cover is NOT doweled into place. If you remove it, it's best to us a slip fit bushing in the seal bore and over the crankshaft to line things up before tightening the cover in place. If you don't remove it, it might be worth your time to try and measure around the crank to make sure the cover is lined up.
