Allis Chalmers C brakes

I am finally getting serious on restoring the Allis Chalmers C. Got the head back from the machine shop and hope to get it back on this week, along with pistons, sleaves, etc. I am having problems with brakes. What is the trick in getting new bands in around the drums?

Having the inside clean so it does not have plow crap to get around the drum. I did a couple of them like you are trying to do. I then started removing the final drive from the transmission. That way I could get the inside clean and the old bands out and the new bands in thru the big hole.

Taking the final apart is a good way to turn a few thousands off the drum to clean it up, and clean the housing at the same time....... That being said, if you wash out the housing in place with soap / water, after digging with a screw driver, / and flush with a garden hose it should be clean enough. Park under a beam in the garage. Run a #9 wire around the brake drum and back out the housing. Attach one end to the brake shoes and the other onto a comealong attached to the beam above. Have the tire an inch off the ground so you can rotate the tire/ drum as you winch it thru slowly. It will fit.

Let me think about that a bit. I took the final drive off a Farmall A once to replace a seal. The drive of the Allis C looks similar. I did not find it an easy task. The final drive on the Farmall A was h-e-a-v-y. I do have a cherry picker now, but not the back I once had.

Thanks

The Allis Chalmers manual says "below Serial Number B-64501 and C-20623 the final drive housing must be chipped out to allow band to pass around brake drum." What does "chipped out" mean? My tractors is C-12837.

They figured out that it fills up with dirt and oil which turns into a solid coating and will not just push out of the way. That was before the tractors had set without being used for years and they figured out that it was a great place for small rodents to take up residents.

I used a floor jack in conjunction with an engine lift after a few years. If I was to do one today I would use both of those and two collage football half backs.

Gosh, an instruction manual that acknowledges that something does not come apart and go back together after 70 years the same as it did in the factor. That is something new for me <smile>.

Larry, I have invited many times for people to look at the many pictures of the small B's and C's that I have taken while having them apart. I have never sorted them out in one place so the albums are scattered. Your are welcome to look thru them if you would care.

Well, I got both brake bands on this afternoon. Chipping out the brake drum area is right. I did a of work cleaning out the dirt and maybe one mouse nest. The brakes Allis Chalmers C were definitely not meant to set outside. There are lots of ways for dirt, etc. to get in them.

To finally get the brake band pulled around, I used a half inch wide and maybe an inch this piece of aluminum. Wire would slip to side of the drum, as would small rope. Took awhile but got it. Found the generator is stuck, so off to an electric shop in town with it.
