WD-45 stuck in gear

I am not real familiar with AC tractors, however we (the museum I belong to) have a WD-45 that is stuck in 1st gear. I was told that is a fairly common ailment. I have two questions, first how do we get it out of 1st gear, and second is there a way of preventing it from happening again ?

It"s not a common problem, but usually from abuse. Under the rubber boot, remove the snap ring and pull the shifter out. Reach in with a long heavy screwdriver and align the three shifting forks in their center position. The bottom of the shift lever may be worn and in need of building up.

When you remove the shifter, be careful to not dislodge the 2 rectangular buttons, from the housing. these index with the round bulge on the shifter, and tend to disappear into the tranny, if allowed to fall down the tube. Heavy wheel bearing grease will hold these buttons, in place, till the shifter is replaced.

For me it's much easier to take the top cover off, only 6 bolts and then you can see what your doing.
The cause is worn parts, but if you shift it correctly it will not happen. Follow the shift pattern precisely, do not cut corners when going from one gear to another.

If you take the top cover off to align the shift rails...I find it easier to shift the tower into reverse before installing. However, you need to shift the corresponding shift rail (the left one) also into reverse (forward). For me, it"s easier to align.

That's the way I do it, just pull the whole top and put it back together properly. I've had to weld up the end of the shift lever before to build up worn areas. I just build it up with a 7014 rod and then use a zizz wheel and or a file to shape it like it's supposed to be Once you get it all back to spec, it should work like a champ.

Here are some dimensions I "borrowed" from someone on the other A-C site.
