Allis Chalmers C hood

I am working on restoring a 1942 Allis Chalmers C (serial number C12837). Some previous owner cut a larger hole in the hood to fit a muffler. Does anyone have the dimensions for the hood so I can fix the hole and get it right?

Thanks

Mount the hood on the tractor, install the muffler. Gap between hood and muffler is about a quarter inch.

Thanks, that should work. Actually I plan on taking it to an auto body shop have them weld in a piece. Did this before with another tractor and it worked for me. I am not that good of welder or fabricator. But with your directions, I can give them an idea of what is needed.

Thanks

I just went out and measured my C. The exhaust hole is the same diameter as the air cleaner hole. It seems like some of these tractors had a hole big enough for the muffler body as original equipment, not just the muffler pipe. Maybe that was just the D series. I don't know. If the manifold has been, or will be replaced, that might change what muffler will fit. All that to say- you might want to consider all that before making a final decision. Looking at the same model, but different tractors you will see why they made the holes seemingly so big- sometimes one edge will be close to the pipe. So custom fitting yours as JMS says is a good idea.

I put underhood mufflers on my B & C. to avoid low branches as I mowed around with a belly mower.

Good idea. Thanks very much.

If you get a round hole in a patch larger than the hole to place over the exhaust pipe. With the hood on you can scribe around the patch on the hood the body shop will have the hole in the exact place needed.
