My dad just bought a 1943 C. Straight sheet metal good runner
with older paint. We are going to restore it mechanicly then
paint it. It starts a little slower than we like. Thinking the carb
needs tuned at least and the usual stuff. We were wanting to put
a new set of piints in the mag but nether one of us have done
this with a magnito. Is it difficult and is there anything we need
to be aware of before attempting this?

The magneto / outer cover needs to be timed to the rotor just like a distributor. Depending on what mag you have, when you remove the outer cover, there are two gears that must be match marked to stay in time. You can check the gears prior to reinstall, and you can roll the motor and check for spark at the right time to verify.

Send me an e-mail and I can then send you the manual for the mag. Also tell me which one of the 2 it is so I only have to send it once. I have both manuals in my computer so the cost is only a few minutes of your time

First you want to find out what brand and model of mag you have. Tractors that are 60 years old can have anything magneto from a JI CASE to a WICO.

The orginal mag would be a Fairbanks morse type J4B3.

Points can be very pricey for the fairbanks models.

I got back to the tractor today. The mag is an international harvester. I dont see any other distinguishing marks on it. Anybody got any ideas?

it just about has to be a model H4. Used on farmall M,H,A,B.

There were two versions of the H4. The gas tractors the magneto turn clockwise or Right hand.

The diesel tractors like the MD WD6 or WD9 used the counter clockwise or left hand model. The serial number on the LH magnetos will have either a letter "L" or "D".

Your allis needs the Right Hand model
