traction booster gauge

Does anyone make a functional replacment gaugr for a wd45? I have seen dummy gauges but never a working one.

I think agco has them. they are very pricey. I also think Steiners' has them. Don't know how good they are.

My gauge hasn't worked in years.

You actually don't "need" the gauge, once you get the feel for everything..
As the Hitch compresses, the Hand Clutch handle pulls forward as the pulling gets harder..
NEW plow shares will require a much LOWER Lever than worn shares..
Many times, I need to have the Hyd. lever all the way Down AND hold back on the hand Clutch lever to keep the front nearer the ground (4x14", 4 Loaded tires AND front weight)..but Still in 2nd gear..!!
Just watch the rear wheel slippage and lightness of the Front end..expect to steer some with the brakes..
What a FUN way to get 'er Done..!!

I was pleased to see that after market traction booster gauges became available a few years back but have heard nothing but bad things about these imported junk!! Mostly needles falling off!! Buy the real deal or have it rebuilt. Ryan

I thank everyone for their replies. I understand it is not nessicary for the operation of the tractor just thinking of restoring one I have and I would like it to actually work if I've putthat much work into one. Ive been using the tractor for years without one now but like I say if you're going to restore one I feel you should go all the way or its just a paint job. Either one is fine just depends on what you like.

I have 2 from Steiner, both have worked fine for 2 years that they have been on.

I bought mine from Steiner and it works fine. Not sure why the dummy gauge is the same price as a working gauge though.

May I ask what tractor you have that has 4-14" (Assume tires) and a hand clutch activated with the hydraulics?? With all due respect that is something I never heard of before on a Allis Chalmers tractor. If your hand clutch kicks out under a heavy pull on a WD/WD-45 maybe you should adjust it.cleddy

He means 4 14" plows (4 bottom)

The hand clutch kicker is a device that actuated the hand clutch if you hit a rock, it would kick the hand clutch into neutral.

Thanks for clearing that up. It makes sense now. I grew up with WD & 3 bottom mounted plow and they just creeped along in clay soil. Didn't need anything else to slow it down. cleddy

They are both WD-45 tractors and we push them to the Limit and have for years..
Believe me, when they have their "Ears laid back", front end light or lifting under a Maximum pull, the Hand Clutch does move forward as the Spring in the Hitch compresses..
I have ALL the washer type shims removed from the Spring cover, maximizing the Spring pressure on the Hitch and still HOLD back on the Hand Clutch lever to help reduce the front-end lift (and that is sometimes with the Hyd Lever all the way down..
I like to run one Dual on the left side and keep the left rear wheel moved in..
I find it amazing that when plowing..one behind the other (both with the same load), the REAR tractor will always easily catch the front tractor..like the freshest furrow pulls easier..
and, Yes, 4x14" was an option for the later WD-45..

Yes, it would be the Kicker that is pushing on the hand clutch lever because the hitch moves as the Load on it compresses the Hitch Spring.
Probably never anything most will ever encounter.
Ever hook to a good Chain/ Stump and accidentally jerk too hard..? The Hand clutch will Kick out..
Same thing, it is the Hitch and what a fine piece of craftsmanship it is..so well tailored to the design needs of that tractor..

Is the kicker something I could buy or is it there and just not noticed. My WD-45 came in parts and not sure about that and if I have it. I have a Gleaner E engine on my tractor so it should be pretty strong. Thanks for clearing that up.cleddy

It was an addition. I've only seen a couple on tractors, s I'm thinking they were kind've rare. Long rod with a tuning fork like thing on one end. Pivots on the snap coupler bell attaching pin. When something like a rock was struck it was pushed forward and disengaged the hand clutch.

You should already have the Kick-out device on your tractor..
It sticks up behind the lower pivot of the Hand Clutch lever, with an open "Fork" that the hand clutch lever slips in and is a guide for the kick-out, It is adjustable with threads and a lock nut (for length).
Your Gleaner engine should be as good as any original Gas WD-45 engine..
Nice choice..
