Allis Chalmers Power Director " HELP ! "

I just bought a 1964 D19 Diesel. It seems to run like a beast! I changed all the fluids in it and when it was sitting in my garage not running I just went to move the high/low lever into neutral and all of a sudden its not connected at all. No sounds like something breaking or anything. Its just not connected and I can slid the lever out shaft and all. I didn't pull it all the way out because oil started coming out. Anyone know what happened ? and can I start it and move it ? It was working right before and all I did was change the oils. I don't know much about tractors. I took apart a Ford Jubilee replaced all the worn parts painted it and put it back together. Came out great. I also have a 1948 Farmall M , very nice that I take to the antique shows and pull with it . I got the D19 to restore and do the same. Thanks for any help. MIke

It's not the most friendly site, but Agco parts should have a picture which will help. Should be a snap ring, (and some washers) on the left end, to keep the shaft from sliding out. It sounds like the shaft slid far enough that the keys between it and the yoke fell out. Remove side cover for access/reassembly/inspection/adjustment.

I took the cover off the left side and the snap ring and washer did fall off. The keys must have fallen out because the lever is still not attached. Can I get the keys in by taking the cover off the other side , or how do I do it ? Thanks Mike

It's been a long time, but if memory serves correctly, before splitting the tractor right there, you remove the cover, and with the snap ring off the left end of the power director operating shaft, you withdraw the lever/shaft to the right, and catch, or drop the keys(two) inside. For reassembly, you hold the fork in place with one hand, start the shaft in enough to catch the fork, then you slip the keys in place, before shoving the shaft on through.
