D17 rough running

DCL

D17 series III only runs at low rpm. If more gas is given, it farts and cracks and runs rough and will shut down as if running out of fuel. I have cleaned fuel system added fuel filter and put kit in carb. I just put new points and condenser in and it still runs the same. I'm out of ideas. Any help?

Rebuilding a carb is an art and takes time and the right tools to do it as should be. If you also added an in line filter that could be your problem since most are made for systems wit ha fuel pump. You need to soak a carb 24 hours in a good carb cleaner which is hard to come by now days then blow out and spray all passage ways out and then do it again. I use a torch tip cleaner tool to poke out all passage ways

Check for good fuel flow from tank to carb. Check for bad coil, bad wireing, etc, etc. Does it help if you choke it some?

My thoughts.

Check your coil. I had a WD 45 that did the same thing. rand good at an idle and started ok.. but popped, banged, and missed at higher RPM. It turned out to be a weak coil.

My Model D grader (same D-17 engine) did the same thing then would not start my brother spent all day trying to figure it out. I replaced the coil and it started right up.
My D-17 does that also once in a while and I just clean the bowl and ck for good fuel flow then I pull out the Power jet adjustment from the bottom of the carb bowl and blow out any crud from the jet and ensure I also got good flow there too. Runs great after that.

. Years ago I bought a 170 and couldn't' get to run the 1 mile home.It would always start , run and accelerate and not miss-for about 3 minutes. I did all the same fixes as everyone else here with no results. Went thru again, but this time I removed sediment bowl assembly (not just glass bowl) and found a dead spider and some dead bugs plugging the inlet. Let some gas flush out additional debris, reassembled and enjoyed sound of properly running engine.

My WD-45 was running rough I bought the usual electric parts to put in. I let it run this weekend to warm it up. Ran crappy then quit. Checked the gas level and could see gas in the tank, checked the cap, rotor, points all looked good. Put more gas in the tank and it ran like a top. I forgot if this tractor gets low on gas it runs like it is fuel starved but will run for quite some time.
