Can anyone suggest a good type of heater for this tractor to help with cold starting in the winter? There are dipstick heaters, block heaters, oil plug heaters, magnetic block heaters, etc. What works well and is easy to install on these tractors? Specifics on model numbers, size, watts and so forth greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I bought two of these last winter when it was -10º and colder. I couldn't find a good place on the block so I put them both on the pan. Started real well. I got the magnetic heaters so I could us them on any of my tractors that I decided to use.

Thanks Dick L. I'll give them a look. I like the idea of just slapping them on when needed and taking them off easily when not needed.

How soon do you need it to start? How cold is your area? Block heater tank heater or lower radiator hose heaters come in multiple wattages, provide fastest warm ups. 1500 watt tank heater on a 6 cyl tractor engine is common here. Couple hours and good to go.

I have used block heaters, tank heaters and the magnetic ones also. Block heater is by far the best bang for your electrical buck. They are usually sized to the application. Tank heaters are a fair bit more innefficient but will warm the engine and make it start. I do like the magnetic heaters for oil bath air cleaners. Helps to warm up the intake air even on a gasser.

AR,
As mentioned the block heater is very effective. Only catch is to find a frost plug to remove and having enough room for the heating element in the water jacket. The tank heater is what I am installing on an HD3 Allis today. I installed a 1000 watt into the system and it is not enough for the four cylinder in northern Minnesota. Will be installing a 1500 watt to make it quicker and hotter. Plan to sell the 1000 watt which is three months old and hardly used. They run about $50. HTH
