ac 175 injector pump removal

I need to have my injector pump rebuilt. First step in the service manual is to:
"1. Prior to pump removal set the engine at specified timing. this will facilitate pump installation later"
I am not sure how to do that, and cannot find anything in the book. I assume #1 cylinder needs to be at TDC on compression stroke but how do I determine or confirm that.
If I pull the inspection cover will I be able to see the marks on the engine idler gear and the injection pump drive gear?
It is a 1977 with a Perking 4 cylinder engine with a CAV injector pump.
I don't have a scribed line on the pump or timing case so I will add that before I remove the pump.
Any other tips would be appreciated.

That's one you can remove and replace without checking the flywheel timing. There is a scribe line on the pump flange that should line up with timing cover mark, if not just note where it is. Remove all lines and linkage, then the cover in front of pump drive gear. Remove the three bolts in gear that thread into pump drive hub. Remove three pump nuts/washers and remove pump. You will then see the gear pin that aligns with the hub notch, it will only go back one way. Just had the same type pump off a JCB Perkins 236 to repair fuel leaks.

Thanks Dieseltech. I wasn't sure about the timing. I think i can handle it now.
