wondering what is the different in all the four series of D17's built. neighbor ask me to ask as he does not have a computer and is looking to buy one THANKS

First three series are very similar to each other....Series IV has the independent hydraulic system, not just live via the hand clutch. Also has the 3ph factory option, more hyd valves.

I got this from the computer a few years ago......
seems to about cover it all.

Am sure if he is looking for a d-17 then he understands, if he buys one with a snap couple hitch, that equipment is getting hard to find.

I would advise only buy a series IV as it has the 3 pto hitch factory, however, they are good tough tractors and you will pay top dollar for one in good condition.

I had all kinds of snap couple equipment for my old d-14 AC, but that was years ago.

I had the pond scoop, corn drill, sub spoiler, pickup disc, set of disc plows, cultivator,

I never found the snap couple boom pole or Bush hog, but after I sold the tractor, I later saw those items for sale.

The aftermarket 3 pt hitch adapter was not as good or strong as the factory three point hitch in my opinion.

Good comparison- except for the misleading hyd description- all D17"s were live, but Series IV was independent hyd. Definitely a major difference.

I believe the Series IV would be considered "live" hydraulics as the pump is working whenever the engine is running. I think the WD/WD-45/ and early D-17s might be considered something else.....I've always thought of them as "semi-live".

Live is being able to stop wheel motion and keep the hyd or pto operating, no matter how it happens. Independent hyd is hyd being available whenever the engine is running.

I don't want to knitpick but even the late Norm Swinford states on page 89 of his book (which I refer to as the A-C Bible) "It was a true live hydraulic system for the first time on a D-17".
I simply deduced that the earlier hydraulic system may be considered something less than a "true" live hydraulic system.
Operating a loader tractor with hydraulics that operate all of the time without the need to use the hand clutch is certainly more convenient and frees up one hand. JMHO
