WD-45 Engine Rebuild

Hi, I've read a lot of the posts on this website trying to find exactly what I need and haven't so I became a member to post this. I have a 1954 WD-45 and I'm going to rebuild the motor. I have it completely disassembled and the head has been crack checked and shot peened to clean it. I want to get a little more power in the block and have read a very wide variety of options for this. I've read to use the 170 cam for more power or use the D17 cam with WD aluminum flat top pistons. Every kit I've looked at uses the same part number for WD/WD45/D17 pistons or camshafts etc. So hopefully somebody can appreciate my confusion with all this. I want to do it right the first time. And a little about me, I have rebuilt two auto engines so am new to tractor rebuilds and the sleeve design so I am very willing to take help, thank you.

Possibly most difference in auto to wd45 would be
o rings at bottom of sleeve. I use water soluble
personal lube to slide sleeves with o rings in
block. Most will notice this is just KY Jelly.

I prefer to use Modern Silicone "Gasket Maker" when installing the sleeves and "O-Rings".
Nothing like MORE insurance against future leaks..
A FULL Pint of Permatex Non-Hardening Sealer is advisable, poured and completely spread over and around the Sleeves insures against leaks from a possible future crack between a pair of Sleeves too..
For my WD-45, I installed a Gas D-17 4 1/8" kit (M&W) and that increased the compression to the Maximum you can use "on the Farm" without special fuels..
FWIW..

you can still get the AGCO 175 piston kit. It is a bit pricey, but the compression is 8.25:1 compared to 7 or so with the D17 pistons.

Sandy Lake has the kits

OK, thanks. The d17 kits seem to be the same part as the wd45 kits. Does the block have to get bored out for the 175 kit?

OK. Well I don't get why the part number kits are the same for the different sizes? Not trying to be rude just don't understand how they're different size if same part number. Thanks. Can anybody put a good link on here for who to go through?

Advertised at 7.4:1

Timing needs to be right on the Money (under a FULL Laboring Load or it will Rattle, but it hangs real good and does a very GOOD job..(4x14" in 2nd gear ALWAYS)....

You can pull that size plow in 2nd with only the done? Nice. So what do you recommend for a camshaft? I have to get a new one as the lobes are worn well down on several of mine. Thanks

Dad's WD-45 was Delivered with a 4x14" Semi-Mounted plow in 1957 and never had any problems.
ALL 4 tires are Loaded and a piece of RailRoad rail across the front is all the weight on the front.
My WD-45 is a 1955 and I pull the same plow..
Nothing else done on the re-build..just the D-17 Gas kit with Sleeves.. no new cam, altho I think I installed 318 (Chrysler) Valve Spring Retainers to raise the seat pressure.
Install a New 9 Spring pressure Plate, if you need to replace the Engine Clutch.
Remove all the spacer washers from the cap that compresses the Main Hitch Spring, so the front stays down better..!!

You will have to call a AGCO supplier such as Sandy Lake Implement.
You won't find them online that I have seen very often.

CAM, I doubt you will find a 170/175 either, they are pretty rare to come up for sale. Plus the gear teeth are different
I'd stick to a 45/Early D17 CAM

The trick with 175 rebuild kits is the crank and rod bearings are different sizes from a 175. You need to find a deal who will swap out the bearings or buy the pistons separate from the gasket/bearing set. After that, it's not that hard.

I've been looking at a lot of kits and reading everything I can find in the different forums on here and it looks like I found a '175 kit' that is stated to have the 8:1 compression. It says it's high compression and has flat top pistons, this will be ok to run in my wd45 correct?

No one can post a link to a kit here as the site
owner will ban them from the forum. Open
discussion of other suppliers is not permitted.
