7020 issues

Bought a 7020 about a year ago and finally got to putting it to
work. Tractor starts pretty good and runs well under load. It
can run a 15 foot mower with ease.

Trouble is it it won't idle properly. If i start it it will race with
minimal throttle. Idle is possible but difficult to obtain with very
small inputs to the throttle lever. Engine does not seem to
have good power at low throttle. While road running with it i
had to go down a couple of large hills. I throttled down some
and started down the hill. Both hills the tractor died half way
down but promptly restarted at the bottom.

Was thinking of starting with pulling injectors and testing them.
Any other good thoughts about what's going on?

I doubt it's the injectors, sounds more like the metering valve is sticking in the injection pump. My 7000 did that too when I first got it. The DM model Roosa pump does not use a flex ring like the DB models did. First make sure there is no water in the fuel. Mine came out of it with fresh fuel, and working the shutoff lever quickly. Set the throttle about 2000 RPM, and with the stop cable disconnected work the lever off and on several times to quickly move the metering valve. This works with electric shutoff pumps too, just turn the key off and on. Mine is OK now, but if there has ever been bio fuel used and left set awhile with no use all bets are off. Pump will need a complete cleaning inside if that has happened.

Thanks for the advice. Yes this tractor has sat some cause it had an oil leak that needed some spare time to fix. Who knows how many jockeys hauled it around to sales before we bought it too. Don't know if it has had biodiesel though. I will give your fix a try otherwise it may be one if those things I just learn to deal with for this fall.

Does the tractor have an electric pump prior to the injector pump? The 1981 models had this and can also cause erratic issues as described.

I had a chance to work on the tractor tonight. I managed to get it working much better just by working the shutoff as you described. Took about a half and hour but it will idle and act normal now. Thanks for the advice.

Is there a additive, that can be put in the diesel fuel, to prevent failure of the Roosa Master pump? I know i didn't use any B fuel !!!
