I have a WD that I just bought to use as a pulling tractor. She has some good power so I was wondering how I could identify which block was in it.

As to blocks, you could have anything from a WC to WD to WD45 to D17 etc. But that tells you nothing of what is currently inside - pistons, crank, compression ratio, etc.

The biggest difference in blocks would be the early WC and WD blocks have a removable plate bolted to right side of block. The WD45 and D17 blocks do not have this plate.

If you really want to know how block started life, look for s/n steel stamped into left side of block behind carb. You may have to scrape off grease or paint but is should be in small rectangular flat spot.

Look for both prefix (W, WD, 45-, 17- etc) as well as suffix (K, G, HA, KA GA, PA, K, G, GH, etc) - A is aluminum pistons, K is distillate (low CR), G is gas, HA is early High altitude (higher CR). CR increased over years - PA is later WD gas with higher CR than GA. WD45 increased displacement and went back to G, K, etc - GH was LP on WD45 I think. Dont have the D17 suffixes off hand, but they would have been higher CR still.

Thanks for that I'm wondering if it may not be a Combine engine
 
Not sure which AC combines would have used any engines other than those described above that would be a drop in. I have seen a 6 cyl gas combine engine in a WD45 chassis - but I think it was a replacement for WD45 Diesel 6 cyl.

Look for ID s/n behind carb - thats best starting point.
