D-17 repair to low range

Shopping for a tractor, found a D-17. When you pull the Power Director back, it's like shifting into neutral. High range works fine. Will probably need to split the tractor to repair? Will buy the manual and take it on, just wondering how big a job it will be ?

I had the same issue with my first D17, back in the 70s. Made my own splitting stands and followed specs in the I&T AC-17 service manual. Pay attention to the shim specs and measurements. Not a big deal. Worked fine and I had no parts left over, so it must have been a good fix.

simple thing to check before time-consuming split....
make sure the set-screw and lock nut are tight on the bottom of the lever....easily overlooked.
