Allis 190 hi lo issue

Got a AC 190 from a buddy. Runs good and trans seems ok but the hi lo will not stay in either position, always falls back to center. You have to hold it or bungee it. Been doing that holding it in hi. What could problem be? Will it hurt anything just to leave bungee"d in hi all the time?

The detent is right up there in the handle. It's either worn, rusted, or something.
The only concern I can see, other than being terribly unhandy, is not having the clutch/valve engaged all the way. You don't want the clutch slipping.
