looking at 185

Hello folks , looking for advice . Looking at a 69 185 diesel hours unknown . Runs excellent , director works as it should ,claims to have rebuilt motor and tranny but there is a definite noise in transmission which gets louder in reverse . Rubber is almost new , says he will take 4 grand , any thoughts . Thanks

Noise from transmissions or final drives? Not uncommon to have "howing" or "whine" come from final drives from small pitting on the bull gears form condensation rust over the years. This is not a problem but you may find it annoying.

If transmission was repaired ask exactly what was done -meaning what was tractor doing (e.g. jumping out of 3rd, 4th, etc.) Ask for a list of gears replaced, both primary and countershaft, idlers, shift forks, bearings, if AGCO or A&I gears, etc. Drive it downhill with a load if possible in each gear and see if stays in gear...if it does, good to go. Transmission was fine if not ground into gear (abused) and put together properly without excessive play on the shafts and forks set to made the gears fully engage. Mike

The owner says it was a complete rebuild , 5000 bucks. No paper work yet though. The noise is there even when not moving , sounds like a bearing maybe . I may try to get him down a little more with the assumption she needs work , maybe plan on tearing it apart . Thanks for input.

Sounds just like the one I have...tranny didn't sound too bad when it was 0 out and I loaded it...put her to work in the summer and after about an hour of disking it sounded like it was ready to grenade. Another project....

(quoted from post at 04:29:07 08/24/14) Are sure its the trans and not one of the final drives? They'll howl like heck if they run dry of oil.

Final drives are not turning when you are sitting still....my guess would be an input shaft bearing.

Thanks again for your input. Checked her out again and I think she's worth it . Planning on trans work . Comes with complete set of manuals , they're worth $300, throw in the new rubber and documented engine work and I believe it's worth it.
