Can you post a photo of the starter area indicating what is getting hot?

I'm gonna GUESS there is a grounding issue between the starter and the chassis and battery.

Is the "ground" cable connected as close to the starter as possible (even using a starter mounting bolt), or is is connected to some steel superstructure (dash support, for example) that may not be making good electrical contact with the cast iron chassis/engine/starter?

You could try running a separate ground (even one lead of a set of jumper cables) from the grounded battery post to the metal case of the starter and see if that stops the heating/makes it crank.

Ed,
Did they replace the bushings?

If it"s like the D17, the battery is just above the starter, and the ground cable attaches to the superstructure/hood support. I like the idea of a separate ground cable between starter and battery- very easy to do, although mine have never had that issue.
