no spark on WD

Running a fm x series mag. New points, plugs, New dist cap, rotor. Number 1 not firing. No. 4 fires most of time. Plug wires okay. And ideas??? Checked all cylinders with same plug wire. Any suggestions?

Billpa, I will post the results of my test tonight. But two different caps have the same problem with #1, so I'm thinking it's not really a cap issue.

A possible easy fix for this problem is switch out the magneto for a coil/distributor ignition I have. (See new thread I just started.)

Tractorguy2, yes, already checked this possibility: one plug wire moved around the distributor cap with sparky grounded on frame. Good spark on #2, #3, some on #4, nothing on #1. Same good copper wire, same good spark plug. So it's definitely not the wire or the plug. As posted earlier, I will double check continuity of new distributor cap this evening. Assuming it's good, the problem HAS to be in the magneto.... Or as Stu ON has emailed me, #1 and #4 are on the same cam, so it could be a bad cam on the mag shaft. Lots of checking to still do.

Thanks,
Billy

(quoted from post at 09:28:05 07/25/14) Billy , new cap doesn't rule out bad cap

Roger that. I will run a continuity test on the cap tonight after work.

Continuity and ohm test indicate no problem with cap.

In searching old threads the mag only shuts spark to one cyl under rare circumstances. I am now leaning toward a points alignment issue. Any other thoughts welcome.

Getting back to everyone who helped me out. The problem turned out to be points that were not adjusted EXACTLY. They were approximately .28 instead of .20. Once I got the points gapped properly, it started running just fine.

The mag is producing lots of spark. After I got the points adjusted right, I held the #1 wire in my hand with spark plug grounded to the frame. WOOOOOOWWWW!!!!! My entire arm will attest to excellent spark! lol
