D-17 power director

I just bought a 1957 D-17 from a neighbor. Tractors runs good but the power divider won"t snap into high. High works but I have to keep pressure on the handle. Low works fine too. Any suggestions for adjustments or repairs would be appreciated.

It can be adjusted, BUT, you gotta have the ITT manual to do it. And before you start on it, turn the cell off, lock the shop doors, send the dogs and kids off someplace for at least the day. Adjusting, or rebuilding those takes your complete concentration.

Is this a common problem? Anything to try before completely tearing tractor apart? How available are parts for the power divider if it needs rebuilt?

First few things to check. First - do you have the compartment filled with good trans/hydraulic fluid (left dipstick from gear shift while sitting in seat). Next - is the bolt on the bottom of the shift lever tight on the pivot shaft with no slop? Finally - is the lever hitting the stop bolt when going into the high side? If so you can remove washers to make sure it shifts all the way in.

All that check out good? Okay - first thing you want to do is throw the IT manual in the trash and get a proper Allis/ACGO service manual to work on the power director. IT manual I believe is wrong or very incomplete in this area.

Next - if it won"t stay in high then adjusting it won"t do you any good. If you move shims around to "tighten" it up it will just jump out worse. Unfortunately you are looking at a split of the tractor between the transmission and torque tube to fix it. What has happened is the pre-load plate on the high side has the ramps worn. Also the little rollers in the linkage are also worn/flat spotted. The pre-load plates were available from AGCO for about $350 a couple years ago when mine was rebuilt in my Series IV. The rollers are pretty cheap relatively...like $15 each and it takes 3. You"ll need inspect the friction and metal plates too while you are in there and replace if needed (likely only friction needed if at all). You"ll want to buy a pack of shims from AGCO too so you can shim it to the correct tolerances. Finally - replace the PTO shaft seals and the PD seals on the transmission input shaft to fix it right. Might also be a good time replace the PD lever and PTO lever o-rings while you have it apart. Mike

Wear area from rollers - does not take much at all!

Transmission input shaft (top) and PTO shaft (bottom)- where you'll want to replace seals while you are in there.

Thanks for info. I"ll start with basics and go from there. Are service manuals available from AGCO dealers or where can I get a good manual?

AGCO has the D17 service manuals and they are fine for a Series I through Series III. The AGCO service manual version I have is kind of weak on some different Series IV only items but they may sell a differently edited version than the one I got 10 years ago. You can also look on eBay for an original Allis one or other sites that sell manuals.

Parts illustrations are available on-line at the AGCO web site - google "AGCO Parts Books". You should be able to buy all the parts I mentioned from AGCO still. The PD clutch discs are available aftermarket too I think. Mike

This little movie may help you understand the workings of you P.D. Clutch.
