b steeeing question

My new to me '40 B had quite a bit of play in the steering ( probably could move the wheel 30 degrees before front tire movment). Tood the tool box off and removed he steering box and shaft. took it apart and it does not have the "peg" I have seen picture of that wears out. It has a sector gear ( 3 teeth) . It meshes with a worm gear. several gaskets - I assume for adjustment to take out end play the adjustment screw "presses" on the end of the sector gear- to take out endplay ?. The bearngs are good. How do I take out the play or is it just the way it is??

the head has been brazed toward the front where the upper radiator hose is - not too good looking of a braze. previous owner said it needed a valve job. Saw a head that has been manifluxed and valve job - $275 . Am I better getting that or another good head ( musch cheaper) and have it inspected and a valve job - How much is a typical valve job??

Sorry for the lengh- thanks for the help

Your tractor is equipped with a Gemmer steering gear as were all the early Bs. The AC service manual describes the adjustments this way: "Adjust the worm shaft by using the proper number of shims between the bearing retainer and housing. Adjust bearings to a free rolling fit without end play or binding. Adjust sector shaft end play by turning adjusting screw in tightly and then backing out 1/3 turn and locking jam nut. The mesh of the segment and worm is controlled by the eccentric adjusting sleeve and the eccentric rivet. Turn hand wheel to its mid position of complete travel or turning radius. Shake the ball arm to determine the amount of lost motion. Loosen housing cover nuts about 1/2 turn. Turn the eccentric sleeve clockwise gradually, testing at each movement the amount of lost motion remaining in ball arm. Adjust to the point where backlash can just be felt at end of ball arm. It is very important that the adjustments of the eccentric sleeve be finished in a clockwise direction. If the adjustment is too tight turn the eccentric rivet counter-clockwise and readjust as above, carefully."
