Allis B manifold

I have begun to suspect the my 1948 B may have an internal crack in the manifold. It runs very well, starts right up when spun over by the starter, idles well. But it will not start when hand cranked from cold. It starts every time when hand cranked after running a bit. It has a battery ignition and carb is clean. It is a family tractor and has been like this for many years. Just kind of wondering if anyone had experienced similar problems and how to determine if the manifold is my issue other than replacing it.

Hand cranking and starter cranking are to different things sort of. On the starter you do not need every thing perfect to start one up but on hand cranking the timing has to be just right as does the carb and choking etc etc.

I would never say never but I doubt if it is an internal manifold leak problem. I would sooner think it was a compression problem. If the magneto snaps every time cold and after a compression check cold then warm after running for a time without a raise when warm, I would check the carburetor again. The area behind the power jet and the bottom of the discharge tube needs to have a ready pool of gas that does not have to be sucked thru the jet for easy hand crank starts. This area often is skipped when cleaning a carburetor when cleaned at home. It is also a place where a pool of gas is still present when they are thought to be run dry and then evaporates leaving a residue.
