My old Nelson muffler (and I mean old... It's from at least pre-1985) on my WD is on its last leg. It split at the seam at the top a few times and was likewise repaired several times, but now it is rusting out around the crown and I can't limp her along any more (much to my dismay, she sounds so good).
But replacement mufflers have this strange slit at the base where it goes into the manifold -- seems like that's just a path for exhaust gases to escape and wear away at the manifold and for water to get in.
Am I missing something? Are they really supposed to be this way?
