ac 200 gear shift lever

have ac 200. just removed broken gear shift lever and have another coming tomorrow. what is best way to try to retrieve broken half that fell thru tranny gears. do you remove top cover and drain fluid to browse ?

Do you mean the short little shift lever that goes down through the cover? Removing the cover is the only way you're going to get in there to fetch the piece.

correct. removing snap ring allows the gear shift lever to come out. if one removes 8(i think) bolts can one lift cover. does it have to be in 2nd gear(3&4) to re-assemble ?

They have probably been messed up long ago, but there were originally two special dowel/alignment capscrews in opposite corners of the cover.
It doesn't have to be in any special configuration to re-install, but it's a whole lot easier if it is. Second sounds right. But you can easily try different gears.
