180 GAS LIFT PUMP

Trying to help a friend. He has a 180 gas with the G2500 engine and needs a lift pump. The local AGCO dealer wants over $150.00. I looked in the after market vendors we use and nobody shows that pump. OEM p/n 74058966

I had the exact same issue with my 180 gas. diafram (YT won't let me use the correct spelling - it gets filtered as a bad word!) inside went bad and was leaking...and yes the AGCO pump was I think $170 or so. Allis had a habit of using fuel pumps similar but not exactly the same as ones in cars. So I searched and searched till I found what I thought looked like the closest match - Airtex 4459 - and bought one for about $50 and my local auto parts store. Look at the 3 photos below. Left side is original Allis fuel pump. Right is the Airtex 4459. So here's what I did:

1. Main issue was the diafram. Same except the pull rod slot for the cam lever is off by 1/12 turn if you look close at the photos. I was able to grab the metal center with 10" curved vice grips then turn the rod 1/12 turn so it lined up between holes instead of at a hole
2. Reuse both springs inside from original pump
3. Reuse bottom housing and lever from original pump
4. Install all new top valve from Airtex 4459 on original lower body. Move gas line fittings over from original pump. Use good gas rated teflon tape to seal fittings. Use new gasket between top and bottom housings.
5. Bolt on tractor using new mounting gasket and re-install lines.

Mine's been working 2 years now no problems and saved like $120. Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks Mike. I have him look at this and we'll probably give it a try. We've talked about going electric, but that has its own problems.

Mike , any chance you are still on this forum ? I am getting ready to try this on my own tractor . Have both pumps in the shop , but I have not taken the new one apart yet .
I have studied the pictures you posted but i'm not smart enough to follow the part about turning the rod a 1/12 of a turn . Are you talking about the screw holes on the diaphram or hole somewhere else ?

Thank you

I'm still here! If you look at the pictures the old pump is on the left and the new on the right. If you look at the rod on the diaphragm you can see the flat part of the slot on the rod is aligned WITH the bolt holes on the old/original pump and the slot on the rod on the new 4459 pump is aligned BETWEEN the bolt holes. So I used a small set of vice grips to grip the metal center of new diaphram using some padding between the jaws. I was able to do this without the vice grips touching the rubber diaphram material. I then used a small adjustable wrench I think to grab the flat slot on the end of the rod and turn the rod in the metal center to align the flat part with the bolt holes like the original (1/12 turn). Mine's been working 2 years now. Let me know that you got this as I don't see that I can e-mail you. Mike
