5040 starting problem

Trying to get my dad's 5040 woke up from winter nap,we have owned this tractor since new, never had problems starting in the spring, except this year. having problems getting fuel to the pump, spin the motor over, no smoke, no start, this morning I used the primer on the transfer pump and a shot of ether and it did start, ran fine for about 20 minutes or so...shut it off, wait 5 minutes, same problem, no smoke when turning it over to start, my guess, bad transfer pump? Stayed running once we primed and used ether to get going, I am thinking the main fuel pump sucked enough fuel through the transfer pump to keep it going.. any suggestions??

Is there a check valve in the fuel system that is losing prime?

Is your fuel shutoff rod binding partially closed by chance? Also, be mindful when using ether on this tractor that it has a manifold heater on it . . . .
