5040 worth versus headache

I am looking at a 1980 AC 5040. Overall good shape straight tin, weather checked/old tires with 80% tread. Supposedly runs but has a warped head and leaks or uses oil. What is it worth or is the engine problems enough of a headache to pass it up? I know it has a 3 cyl diesel in it and those engines had their issues and parts may be kinda hard to come by. I am thinking if I can get it for scrap price or close to it I could still come out ahead.

What transmission does it have? They are great for roto-tilling if it has the 12 speed in it. I've owned one for 14 years or so that was made by UTB in Romania.

Only issues have been the starter and it looks like I'll be ordering one from this site in the near future.
Overhaul parts are still available from Import Tractors and interchange with Oliver and Long models. Does pretty good for a 40hp tractor and should have interchangeable Cat 1 & 2 rockshafts - just flip them end for end. If you can buy it that cheap and plan on keeping it I think you would have a pretty handy tractor there that is easy on diesel to boot.

external_link.com or one of toms agridiesel's vendors can get anything for a tub engine. I had a long the engine was the best part of it. They are a unique engine as you can actually bore out the sleeves and oversize the pistons.I would recommend toms as they have good parts and prices. It is easier to find another engine but if you overhaul it you know what you have.
