'65 HD3 start up throttle

AC Forum Members,
Attempted to start the HD3 last Sunday and was not successful. It did fire and smoke but believe it was the ether being used. The fuel lines had been bled and the engine tank heater was plugged in heating the intake manifold and eventually the block. Had throttle just about closed. Went to a You Tube cold start up of an HD3 and the gentleman had open throttle and quickly closed it down when it started. Question is at what level should the throttle be opened when starting? Any and all thoughts are welcome.

Any governored engine especially a diesel during start up is
turning below the low idle speed that the governer is trying to
maintain so essentially it starts at full throttle. The throttle
leaver will put a little extra spring tension to the governor to
assist with fuel delivery. On a cold start full throttle is the best.
Bring the throttle back down as it starts. I have unthawed many
vehicles and have never had problems from this. I dont let the
rpm wrap up much past idle during start up but the throttle
leaver dosnt actually do anything during start up unless it is in
the wide open position.
