HD3 Allis intake manifold apparatus

Things are moving along on the '65 HD3 Allis crawler. The starter works with a bypass, antifreeze is where it is supposed to be and when attempting to start, it has plenty of oil pressure. What remains is actually getting it to fire more often.
When attempting to start it today I saw something I did not recognize on the manifold. It seemed to be part of the manifold, an elongated 8 inch cast part with a electrical terminal at the end. Looked like a spark plug wire ran from the terminal to a solenoid looking part. This is a diesel engine. What was this part? Novice when it comes to diesel engines. Any and all thoughts welcome.

What controls and closes the switch on the preheat device? Is it the rusted key on the dash/panel? In the dash/panel there is an ammeter, oil gauge and a temp gauge. Two other spaces are missing gauges. Have no idea what should be in the empty spaces. Any and all thoughts welcome.

Air horn pre heater. You actuate it, by turning the key to the left,
for about a minute, then start. Do not use ether when pre-heating.
Sometimes an einstien re wires the tractor and puts a rubber
button to actuate it, or otherwise rewires the solenoid. My advice
would be to clip a test light to the solenoid actuating terminal, and
start fiddling with key, and switches, till you get the light to light.
 
The impulse for the preheater is a second solenoid probably
located somewhere near the one for the starter. The other
buda diesels have a "jumper" cable from the hot side of the
starter solenoid to the second one for the preheater. The
preheat solenoid wire should probably run to the key switch so
when you turn the key all the way to the right, the solenoid will
"kick in". Turning the key to the left is the accessory, like car ignitions used to be.
