Allis Chalmers CA

I was wondering if you guys could tell me about the Allis Chalmers CA?
I ran into one by mistake today that I am interested in.
I will post pics tonight of it.

I want to do some plowing and a few other things with a tractor.
How many were made?
What were they used for? (I am thinking a row crop tractor)
The one I ran into is a wide front with 3 point hitch.

I was just hoping to get educated about it from you guys here on the board.

Are the parts more than lets say an 8n or a farmall cub?
Are there any common problems with them?
Anything I should know?
Just let me know what you guys have.
It was just a very interesting tractor to me.

CA has a 4 speed trans. Has hand clutch. Pulls 2 14" plows. Draft control hydraulics. Weakness hand clutch may slip if worn. Good little tractor about 39,000. Parts are reasonable, many offered by after market dealers.

I would look on you tube, there are a number of
short video's on the AC "CA".

All I saw had the snap couple hitch, but you can add
a 3 point hitch adapter.

Back in the day there were more WD in my area than
CA.

If you are new to tractors, before you buy, no
matter the brand, try to buy a tractor with live
pto.

You can thank me for that advice later.

If AC is your brand, then 5020 or 5030, they are
small like a Ford but have live pto.

decent little tractors.
I use my little AC's for small wagons, and drags, etc.
3-point stuff goes on the Fords, and heavier drawbar work goes to the Farmalls.
Used parts seem to run just a bit higher than the little Ford and little Farmall parts.
easy to work on, read the book though, internals are a little different if you are used to working on the others.

Here are some pics of it

others may chine in here,
but, if you use a ground Engaging tool like a plow, the draft control will not work with this 3 pt setup.

you must use the snap couple hitch and a snap couple plow for the draft control to work. it would be very hard to control the depth of the plow without the draft control, plow would have to have a check wheel mounted onto the side of the plow for it to work.

talk to some other guys that have used these tractors to be sure on this.

however, drag type equipment and bush hogs will work on this tractor, I used bracing check chains on my old D-14, so it would stop the bush hog at the same level each time.

Good luck,

So would a 1 or 2 bottom plow work with this or not?
I am not going to use a rototiller.
I don't know a lot about this style of tractor. I am kinda new to researching the Allis. I have spent most of my time researching Farmalls. Then I saw this tractor and liked it but did not know a lick about it.

I have included two pictures:

1. shows an AC plow with the snap couple hitch that goes up under a tractor like the CA and hooks to the snap coupler

2. shows a 3 pt hitch plow that you might use with an depth gauge wheel attached.

Interesting thread, im in the market for a small tractor how does the allis b, c, ca compare to a case vac?  there is a nice ca in my area for sale....I would use it mainly for mowing (belly mower)flat land. It seem there are more ac, & cubs than case in central il. Thank in advance john

I don't know about the Case VAC, but the Allis B, C, and CA are all about the same horsepower, which is just about twice the horsepower output of a Cub. My Dad has a Cub with a belly mower and really isn't happy with it. I have an Allis Chalmers B with a 72" belly mower and really like it. Difference is probably the horsepower output of the tractor, in my opinion.
I do know that the number of trees and other obstacles you have to drive around makes a difference as to just how well a tractor with a belly mower does compared to a lawnmower, but tractor to tractor comparisons, the Allis Chalmers with a belly mower (48, 59 or 72 inch) will hold it's own or surpass the others in my opinion.

CA offers 1 more gear choice over the B/C plus the option hand clutch for stopping the tractor but keeping the mower going.

VAC I am not sure, I see very few around here.

As mentioned, if you have trees, a tractor will have you up in them vs. a lawn mower.

Thank you both for you help. I called about allis w belly mower , it was sold, only 3 trees in yard , I can mow around then w lawn mower

The CA was a nice little tractor that at a 1HP difference at the draw bar over the Ford 8N and the same PTO rating it isn't going to work rings around the Ford. Sorry guys just ain't going to happen.

They were nice to operate and easy to repair. Same can be said for the Ford. The hand clutch will allow you to stop forward motion while keeping the PTO running. That's the one major advantage over the Ford. Both, to be as safe as possible need and ORC (over running clutch) because if you step on the clutch the momentum of the mower will push the tractor forward.

The CA if shifted on the go had a tendency after some time to jump out of gear, normally going down hill with a load on behind it. Easy to check for. On a test drive run wide open in each gear and then chop the throttle without touching the clutch, but applying the brakes.

Most often in my area a CA will sell for a little less than a Ford 8N in the same basic condition. Big reason is the lack of a 3 point. You can still buy about any CAT1 3 point implement you want, in not used then new. Snap coupler implements are hard to find and can be expensive.
