D 17 muffler

I bot a D 17, which runs well, but I think has the wrong muffler. The final exhaust is 1 3/4 in. Dia. The air intake is 2 1/4 in Dia. seems (and sounds) like the exhaust is restricted. What is the proper muffler?

To venture on with the topic, why does everybody replace the oval mufflers on the D17, 180, and 185 with the ones where the exhaust comes out the center of the muffler instead of one end like came from the factory? Haven't tried to purchase one, but it doesn't look the same and they have a different tone also. Just wondering.

I would guess cost and availibility would be a factor. Last time I was at the local TSC they had several sizes of mufflers for AC applications, a few for JD and not much else except by order. So there must be a large demand locally for the AC mufflers. They aren't that cheap either, so I'm guessing OEM types are pricey. Most of the Stanley mufflers I have bought from TSC are not as quiet as the OEM types. Definately a different sound.

I haven't measured the muffler pipe on my D-17 but 1-3/4" sounds about right.
I'm not sure the relationship of intake to exhaust is a valid comparison; most intake valves are also larger than exhaust valves.
