Wd won't shift without grinding

Used to shift just fine except for everyone in awhile it would lightly grind like the clutch wasn't disingaging all of the way for a second or two then stop. Now it's a heavy grind that won't stop whenever I try to shift. Pushing the clutch still stops the tractor. I was thinking about splitting it and putting in a new clutch, but if it's a problem that doesn't require splitting that'd be great. Thanks in advance for any help.

search archives of all makes for this common problem , may not have to split to get workin ,, can you spray brake prts clener on the clutch ,,, soumthin stikin in there,,

Have you been greasing the engine clutch release bearing every 10 to 20 hours like it says to in the operators manual?

We had a bad winter and it was neglected with the consistant
use. I forgot all about that grease fitting. I'm going to grease it
and hope that I didn't mess anything else up.

So I pulled the clutch inspection cover and greased everything. Luckily nothing was dry. I had my wife push the clutch while I was under there and everything I could see with the clutch seemed to be functioning like it should. Is there something I can look at inside of the trans that would cause the grinding?

Here's a few random thoughts.
It seems that you can put the tractor in gear and then start it by holding the foot clutch in.

When the transmission oil is warm, you should be able to shift with the hand clutch, as long as you come to a complete stop before taking the shifter out of gear.

This being the case, it's unlikely a transmission problem.

You could put the tractor in gear, hold the foot clutch pedal down with the pedal lever, pull the spark plugs and then have your wife roll the engine 1/4 turn at a time with the crank while you look through the inspection port for when the clutch drags.

If you don't see an easy solution, you need a shop manual.

Your WD will not have a pilot bearing unless the upgrade has been installed.

You can adjust the clutch fingers through the inspection plate as well. I forget the spec right now, but maybe tighten things up an 1/8 of an inch or so and see if that helps.

Have you checked the grease level in the transmission? My WC had been setting for a couple of years and the grease had leaked out, first clue was gear grinding just like you described.

My guess would be the pilot bearing in the flywheel is dragging. I believe I had this issue in 7000 A-C years ago. Never did take it apart, but it works fine now. Unless you want to take it apart, I would put it in gear, start it and hold the brakes when you push in the clutch. It might not work, but if it loosens up it won't cost you anything.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. My apologies for not responding sooner my internet has been down. I"ve tried everything suggested. Only thing left to try is adjust the clutch then split it if that doesn"t work. Anyone have tips for splitting the WDs?

No need to split the tractor in two. I believe that you can remove the radiator, pull the engine & clutch away from the torque tube with an engine lift or chainfall and even sit it crossways on the frame rails to work on it.

Private messaging doesn't work, but if you include your e-mail address in your profile, i will try to send some better instructions your way.
