Bought an AC B last summer, changed valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket, added 4 quarts oil and dipstick reads about one quart low. Also, had to install 2 valve cover gaskets before it stopped leaking. valve cover looks flat and undamaged. Need some help. thanks.

For the valve cover, apply the gasket to the cover with hard setting gasket cement, let it set up over night. Do not use gasket cement between gasket and head. Valve cover leaks can be chronic as the heat from the muffler soften the gasket cement and the gasket moves, that is the reason for hard setting gasket cement.

i follow a plan similar to Ted. I put a thin layer of orange RTV on the cover and glue the gasket to it. Hold in place with close line clamps. The next day i rub a thin layer of RTV on the gasket and set it onto the head. This way it will not slide off and cause leaks.. Not sure about the oil level. Mine are normally 4 to 4.5 qts to the full mark.

Make sure the valve cover will fit down to the head without a gasket first. I bought a coupla leakers that the valve cover was down against the nuts holding the rocker arm stands and couldn't seal. The holes were bent down from over tightening and thick washers were under the nuts.
over tightening of valve covers and pans are a common cause of leaks.
