185 hyd problems

My 185 has always had problems with loader and steering when cold. This year is worse than ever. When cold the loader is jerky and the steering is jerky. The colder it is the worse it gets. Changed filter and oil no better. Once the tractor runs awhile and warms up the problem gradually goes away. Warmed up, hydraulics are excellent. I can hear the pump when it gives the loader a little shot, other than that it is completely silent. I have been reading some discussions about priming the pump. I have never had to prime the pump yet, and it works when warm. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Couple of thoughts.

The casting bolted up to the bottom of torque housing which has the suction tube in one end of it(if I recall correctly) I believe has a screen over it.
Also, (again based on recollection) there is a pipe thread drain plug in that casting. Removing that and draining the oil should enable you to check up through the hole to confirm if there is a screen in there. If so, I would certainly clean it.

The 185 w/loader we had years ago would hiccup somewhat like you describe. I found that keeping the hydraulic reservoir a little over the full mark solved that.

I have had that cover off two years ago to se if there was a restriction and there certainly wasn't a screen there. If there isn't a screen, wouldn't it create less restriction? I will get my 185 in the shop and check it out anyway. I don't want to damage the pump. Thanks for the info.

To check my sanity, I just looked at AGCO parts(is it just me, or is that NOT a user friendly site?) and they show a 249934 screen for all 180-185's.
Can we guess someone removed this screen chasing this issue?
Is the connector hose at the pump collapsing, and/or sucking air?
Maybe a piece of gasket lodged up in the intake of the pump?
It sounds like your pump wants to work, since it works well when warm. Otherwise I would question the pump. So it seems like it has to be in the intake somewhere.

I've got a screen and gaskets etc. on order so hopefully in the next few days I will be able to find out if this works. And you are right... it is not a user friendly site. Thanks for the help Bob.

i dont see lot 185 in my shop but have to customers that both gave one and a200 when thy have hyd problem first thing i check is the suction tube the rubber one on bottom of pump seen thy can get loses also if when its cold i thinking that if your is old witch no one ever change it could be ca-lapsing in side as cold oil take more suction to move also most all those tractor when some one put new clutch in them for the first time cut the metal tube at the clutch housing where you split it and added a rubber splice to reconnect the tube that way you don't have to drain all the oil when installing a clutch if you has been cut make sure the clamp are tight there also some where you are getting air when the oil is cold.
