On an allis C I am putting new pistons in - does the notch go to the front of the motor? Old pistons don't have notch. Thanks
 
It makes no difference on this engine. Make sure that you refer to the post below with the picture of the offset rod cap ends and how they must be installed. If you want the notches to go forward make sure you place the rods the correct direction on the piston by alternating them. If the rods are put on wrong they will bind and can bend the rod causing you to get new or different rods.
 
Notches on the pistons are normally for oil drainage from behind the rings when the pistons run on a slant. Running straight up and down the oil will drain the same each way. It does look better to have the notches going the same way to an observer. It is a pride in your work thing.
 
Are they aftermarket parts? Check the pistons for an offset wrist pin. I just got cylinder kits for a Buda. The pistons have FRONT cast in and a notch on the crown. I noticed later that the pins are offset to the thrust side.
 
I totally agree with that except new pistons made only for these engines will not have notches. The pistons he has, if correct for the engine, would have to have been made for more than one engine make.
