Model B Magneto

I have my magneto removed from my tractor. It had very weak spark. Installed new condenser, points and coil. I hooked up number one spark plug and turned over the magneto. Every time the mag snaps the plug fires, even when it's not pointing to number one plug. Is this normal?
Thanks, Dale

Sounds like you have a cracked cap which is shorted out due to water so it fires on one or all the plugs at the same time or the rotor is not turning. Send me an e-mail and which mag you have an I can send you the manual for that mag

I installed a new cap and that fixed the problem. Thanks to everyone on this site for the help you offer.

Never heard that one and it sure is not in either of the mag manuals I have and I have done that many many times and NEVER hurt a mag to this day

If the mag is in good working order and you crank it over without having all wires in place near a ground, the spark WILL find ground somehow. If that means traveling under the cap to another wire, it can leave a carbon trail that CAN ground out that wire before it gets to the plug.

Still seems odd since in the 30 plus years I have been messing with engines I have NEVER had any problems. And when I say engines I mean just about any thing other then air planes

You have been lucky. That hot spark has to go some place. It can go through the insulation in the windings of the coil & short it out.

Most if that is so will take the path that is the shortest which will be the gap at the shut down tab
