58 Allis Chalmers D17

I recently bought a 58 D17. I have found the year for the tractor it is a 58. I have ordered the manuals for it and hopin they are good ones have heard some bad stories on some of them. The manuals wont be here for a few days and was wondering if someone could tell me what fluids to use. Any help is appreciated. I always change out all fluids when I first get a piece of equipment. When was growing up on the farm we had D17 D19 and D21, miss those tractors, just wish I Had paid more attention to what dad was doing and told me.Thank you for your help.

I have a 59 or 60 D-17 and I use UTF in every part of it other then the engine and in the engine I use 20W-50

I agree with the UTF but depending on how cold it gets where you are and how and when you use the tractor 20w-50 might be too thick. For cold (below zero) winter use consider a 5w-30. 20w-50 is great lube above freezing but is a mite thick of cold weather starts.

Here in Missouri it works just fine but I also do not use it in the winter it is parked in the shed

Starting from the front, 5w20 for PS, in front of radiator, in the
casting, LS, IIRR. Next, motor oil (debatable, on your usage and
climate I use 10w40 synthetic). Next hydraulic, RS, under fuel tank,
UTF works well. Next PD, LS, front of tranny, UTF, again. Next Rear,
80w90. last, final drives, individual plugs on FD, 85w140.

I have a 1958 D17 also. My nephew & I rebuilt the engine and I use it to bale big rounds with an old Vermeer 605E. I had to upgrade the hydraulics to run the gate cylinders on baler. It's maxed out on hill slope when bale is about full. I love that D17!!

5-30 in the engine will make it start easier when it's cold. I used to run 0-w20 Mobil 1 in my CA so it would start easier when I used it for snow removal.
On a gas D17 I'd put 5-30 in the engine, universal trans/hyd fluid in all other compartments except the finals. 80-90 in the finals.
