Alis Diesels

I have an Allis 175D, with a Perkins four cylinder diesel. It seems to be a good motor from my experience, but I don't work it very hard. It has a loader on it, and I mow with it in the summer, and move snow in the winter. I have moved dirt and stone with it also. I haven't ever hooked a field implement to it.

I had a WD45 diesel, the block was cracked between the cylinders allowing the cylinder liners to move below the top of the block resulting in repeat head gasket failures. This was 25 years ago before the electronic era which made finding replacement engines easy. I sold the tractor to a salvage yard. My guess is this tractor had been overheated earlier in its life. I bought it from a consignment auction, "as is"

The first generation Buda/AC diesels in farm tractors didn't hold up well. After that, some could be hard starting, but I think were as good as any other engine. Usually very responsive and efficient.

ran a 190 xt turbo diesel ( which was an A/C engine) , wasnt bad to start , plenty of power , other then no live PTO & hard shifting trans. was a great tough tractor , id give the engine its self 9 out of 10 , engine parts if needed where easy to get too , over all tractor id only give a 5 ,other brands of that time period where nicer to run

Which engines are you looking at? The 230 and 262 in the WD45 and D17 have to be treated right or they will eventually take a nice big bite out of your wallet. The 301 and 426 were much more forgiving.

Have a 185 and a 175, the 185 has been an outstanding powerplant for me, the 175 with a 4 cyclinder Perkins use some oil but starts no matter how cold and still runs fine.

D19 my grandfather bought new was hard-starting from day 1. Ate several head gaskets and a cylinder head til a more experienced shop sent a guy out, he did the engine work and put a block heater on it. Mid-90s we finally put a gas combine engine in it.
My 7580 was hard-starting, too, and it only had 3200 hours.

AC had a lot of experience in industrial stuff, power plant equipment, etc, so they knew how to build stuff that would run a long time, but in those applications, there weren't the heat cycles that you get anywhere else.

Did Allis C make there owndiesels before Budda? The tractor Im talking about is a 210.Thanks for all your help fellas.Cheers.

No. AC used Buda, and bought the company. The successful engines used in the 190, D21, etc. etc. were AC, but I suppose owe their beginnings to Buda.

Before the Buda acquisition, the only diesels A-C used were in crawlers and came from GM. They did build sort of a hybrid engine that used a diesel style injection pump and nozzle, but it was spark ignited.
