Allis C sleeve removal

I am planning on re-sleeving my C. I have done Fords with the dry sleeves - ran a bead of weld up sleeve and they came right out. How difficult are the sleeves to remove on a C? Any tricks with the wet sleeves? Any surprises?
Thanks

The sleeves in a C are not bad to remove. With the pistons and crank removed , take a short piece of 2x4 placed against the bottom of the sleeve and hit the 2x4 with a hammer.

Oak 2X4 and a hammer is all that is needed to pop the wet sleeves out of a C. BTDT many times. Since you rebuilding it lay it head side down with the pistons out. Put it on blocks to hold it up a few inches set the 2X4 on the bottom of the sleeve and hit it a few times and they should pop right out

Get yourself a bar of steel to knock the sleeves out. A block of wood is only a little better than a block of hard rubber. The steel will put the full shock of the hammer directly on the sleeve.

That bar of steel bar leaning against the block behind the hammer has been my tool to remove sleeves from several different makes and sizes of wet sleeved engines. Just set the bar on the edge of the sleeve and whack good and hard and the go to the opposite side and walk it around back and fourth and it or they will be out in minutes. No splinters to clean out.

That may work fine if you do not want to keep to old sleeves and save them. I tried that once and ended up with a cracked sleeve

I have never in all the years taking out sleeves ruined one sleeve that way. Most of the time you don't even damage the rust on the edge of the sleeve. Normally your just loosening the hardened O rings.

Beat away with a splintery board if that makes you feel safer. I am just pointing out how to get them out quick and easy. If you want to pull then without removing the crankshaft it is easier to use a sleeve puller.

I took the picture when it was being told that when the pistons were rusted fast with the crankshaft in that you had to soak them with a concoction and get them moving to get the crankshaft out. After I put the block on the six by sixes and removed the pan, front cover and bearing caps what you see then took a total of 15 minutes.

Well I have used a 2X4 many many times and not had a problem with doing o yet and little to no damage to the 2X4 but I do use old oak so it is almost hard as iron

Early 50s, Dad and brother were removing WC sleeves using a jack under the engine. Stubborn one showed up. Dad took the 16 lb post maul and whacked down on the front of the frame. Sleeve popped right up!

If your that concerned about damaging the sleeve there are several puller that can be bought or made.If you have access to a lathe and some material you can make a step plate with a hole in center.Use heavy enough allthread and riser block on top of engine block and turn til it pulls out. OTC makes a nice adjustable puller but it will cost.If this is the only time you will pull a set of linners, then i would stick with the bar method. The bar i use is brass.Transfers energy well & less damage.Found mine @local scrap yard.
