WD-45 STORY

Since you liked my previous WD-45 story I will tell some more.

One thing , promise not to tell my IH friends I am posting over here ! (Just kidding)

Like I said I was born with IH as Dad worked at IH Dealership all his life. However we had a lot of respect for AC products and Dad was friends with shop guys at AC Dealer. They would trade info and tips when one or the other would trade in an opposite color.

The same Turkey farmer who I worked for pulled a new WD-45 up next to me one day and said you will really like this one. At first I was not impressed, just a new 45 like the one he already had. But then I noticed a different engine sound. Then I noticed hood was longer and grille went clear out to end of cast bolster ?Then I saw the decal DIESEL ! Yes that became my favorite tractor that he had.

I've wanted a WD45 diesel for a long time, and I guess Dad did too. He bought a nearly new WD45 from a neighbor widow. (It stayed until it was traded for our first diesel, a new 180.)
We had gone to an auction when I was just big enough to remember coming home with a nice flat belt. I learned many years later that there had been a nice WD45D at that auction. Dad didn't bid on it because the oil on the dipstick was black!

Years ago Dad bought a WD45 diesel wide front and factory power steering.I mowed 100's of acers of hay with that and an IH 990 seven ft haybine.I thought that diesel was a big step up from a series II D-15.I think he paid less than $1,000 for it.It was latter traded on a Deere 2510 diesel. My first tractor was a WD bought for $500.I sometimes wish for a WD 45 or a D-15 again but with a dozen green tractors I guess I will never own another one.

Here in Central Ohio, nobody wanted a WD-45 Diesel.

They had a Very bad reputation for Engine problems
such as cracking if they were worked very hard..
But, I have always wondered how one would be with a GM V-8 350 Diesel in it..!

I assume when Dad was looking it was before anybody knew much about engine problems. And that has kept my interest in check. I have a nice original WD45 and find it's not nearly as comfortable as one was 50 years ago!
But if a series IV D17D w/factory three point, or a D19D w/factory three point popped up, or about any late D series, I couldn't resist.

Oh, you can get pretty comfortable on a WD or WD-45
once you get used to it..!

The controls are well positioned and you can change the position of your left leg to the rear platform if you like.
I spent many, many hours sitting on the toolbox, when I was small.. That was on my Dad's WD-45 and my Grandad's WD.
These are excellent small Baler tractors.

I have dads 57 wd45 diesel. he paid $1200 back in 74. The engine had just been replaced due to a valve that broke a piston.

Dad bought it for the MF baler. he had a farmall M with M&W pistons. The M would not tie the knots when baling up hill. The wd45 would bale uphill in 3rd gear and never miss a bale. The farmall M was sold.
