D-17 Brake Job Report

A week or so ago I posted about a problem re-connecting the brake rods after completing a relining job (series 1, external shoes). It was like building a ship in a bottle. I found several tricks and thought I'd post them for the next guy to be in this pickle. First back off the top adjustment and the bolt that positions the rear shoe. Then disconnect both shoe return springs. Then I made a hook out of heavy wire to pull the toggle on the bottom of the actuating arm forward; the other end of the hook was bent to fit in one of the holes on the foot rest. I also used a 3/8 bolt (easier to thread) to line up the toggle. With the hook holding the toggle all the way forward against the housing, its a piece of cake to remove the bolt and thread in the brake rod.

Thanks Tim; I need to overhaul the brakes on my 1958 D17 too. I got new liners and rivet kit, new springs too.
I don't think that there's any liners left. I've used my D17 to run a Vermeer 605E big round baler these last two summers and no or very little brakes is "not smart" running that big Vermeer? I just need to tackle it and appreciate your tips.

When you take the shoes out, take a close look at the drums to see if they're cracked.....a common problem if they've gotten hot or been accidentally left in the locked position.
Best to jack up one side at a time and rotate the wheel to see the dorm completely.

Thanks for more helpful info. I'll feel more safe and happy when I get some real brakes going again.
Appreciate your help.
