WD should I scap it?

I have a WD that I saved from being crushed, but now what do I do with it? I fixed a lot of the mechanical problems and used it to grind feed for a bit but I don't really need it and don't have room for it. I have been trying for a while to sell it but no luck. It would be a shame to see it scapped but I don't know what else to do with it. Is there any demand for these old dogs anymore? Any suggestions?

If you can't get over scrap price for a running usable tractor then the tractor market is even worse than I thought. I would think if you put it up for $600 or $800 it would be gone in days. I don't know how much you have in it, but you may have to settle for getting more than scrap price for it rather than getting back out what you have in it. If you scrap it you'd get even less, so that doesn't seem like the best idea to me.

Any body who scraps a tractor should be shot then kicked and well lets just say to do so is just plan stupid. If you have no need for it put it up for sale and just keep doing so. I have at least 4 Faramall Hs I would sell but so far no one has wanted them so they sit here but they will NEVER be sold as scrap. Seen to much go as scrap and one day that scrap will come back like it did in Dec 7th 1941. Yes China is doing the same as Japan did

tractor is about 2 tons and scrap is $200. ton so it will bring maybe $400..... You should be able to sell for twice that, easy.

Keep trying to sell it as a complete tractor. Someone will be able to use it. Those old things just run forever with a little TLC. I don't need another one (have a WD and a 45) but would probably buy it for $400 if you were near me.....So someone else will also.

It is your tractor do with it what you want. The same people bad mouthing you for scraping it are the same ones that will not even offer scrap price for it and are the first ones to go to the bone yard and take parts off of it. You can't save them all and there were over 140,000 WD's built. Like I said its yours to do with as you wish, if that's to put thousands of dollars in a $500 tractor to restore it or to send it to the to crusher and smile when you put the hundred dollar bills in your pocket. But if it was my tractor I would first try to sell it whole then if I couldn't get close to want I wanted then I would take any good easy selling parts off of it the haul the rest to the scrap yard smiling the whole way there. And by the way to all of the people talking smack about scraping it, have you ever bought a used part for your tractor? I wonder quietly to my self where do used parts come from? Is there a factory somewhere that makes used tractor parts that I don't know of yet?

You do with it what you want. But I am sure you can get a few more dollars out of it by selling it whole than scrapping it. Where are you located and did you list it on ytmag. I personally would try selling it. Because it is a shame to see any old tractor go to scrap especially if it is a running tractor. We old tractor collectors are a dying breed and though we cannot save them all we should try to save as many as possible. To show future generations that there was a time of blood sweat and tears.

figure out the scrap price in your area for it,
add a couple hundred and keep advertising it.
be patient.
market is slow, and even us 'buy them all if the price is right'
people have to slow down buying this time of year because of heat bills.
If it runs and moves, it will sell

Just goes to show there are a lot of stupid people in the world and your one of them

And instead of scraper there are tractor parts yards that do not scrap but dismantle and sell parts. They should give more than a scraper. And then it would still be giving good to somebody.

There is certainly a difference between a scrap yard and a salvage yard.

At a scrap yard any and all iron is turned around and sold to a foreign country or a smelter for melting down to make new steel again basically how it would be done if it were iron ore.

A salvage yard actually sells parts off the tractors and will eventually scrap whatever is leftover and unsellable via their used parts method.

Many tractors have a salvage value many times the value of scrap iron so scrapping a high demand tractor is foolish. That said, I do not think a AC WD is a high demand tractor.

What I would do. For a running operating tractor scrap iron value is the least I would consider selling it for ($400 or so). If the cheapskates will not pay that then they are not worth fooling with and I could not blame yah if you scrapped it if and only if you are desperate for money (even though it would break my heart).

Frankly it ought to be worth $800 easy if it runs and operates, but you have nothing to lose by keeping it as it will always be worth scrap iron value at a minimum so keep it use it just do not stick a fortune in trying to restore it as it is not worth it.

Where is the beast located? Started with my WD... joined by a 1940 H... joined by a 1939 B. May be room for one more.

Just look at the price of used tires that will just hold air--you'll have your answer. sell it running for a very reasonable price, maybe you'll start someone else in our hobby--or part it out, you'll be keeping someone else's tractor running.

I would be interested in it also. I definitely would not scrap it there is someone out there that would love to have it as their starter tractor

I would vote for saving it - unless it has weights, its probably under 4000 pounds and they will subtract for tires and anything else they can think of that they have to "get rid of with no value",

Where are you and are you sure its a WD instead of a WD45 - what is serial number?

As someone else said try to sell at about $200 over scrap price - a running tractor should sell pretty easily at $500-600 - maybe even $700-800 if tires are good. Probably better luck in the spring time if you can wait.

Thanks for all of your replies. I feel like most of you, I hate to see these tractors get scapped because then they're gone for good. BTW I am in Dale, IN. I would like to find someone to buy this old dog for tinkering with. It runs real good and don't use much oil at all,but the sheet metal is rough. I put a new back tire on it, a new radiator, new brakes and rebuilt the carb and starter so I know I'll never get what I have in it back out of it but I had hoped to get $1000 out of it, is this a pipe dream or am I in line on price and just need to try a little while longer to sell it?

Park it cover it up and let it sit. It will not eat any thing or burn any thing an in a year or 10 is you park it the right way it will still run just fine. Scrapping it will only do one thing and that is fuel the war machine of China who in turn funds Korea North that is who wants to go to war with the U.S.A.. That is why I have at least 10 tractors that just sit and are parts or runners that I have no need for but they do not eat any thing and I would prefer they become a part of my fence before they become scrap to China

$1000 for a good WD with a new tire is probably not unreasonable. It may be a bit on high side as I have bought 2 running WD45"s for that - one an adj wide front this year. But it may take some time. May be better in the spring. Your target right now would be someone looking for a restoration project - probably a father-son thing. They are a relatively easy project as parts are available, but too common to be valuable once restored. If you want sooner, to move it try scrap price plus $200-300 or $750-800

If you park it, take care to protect tires especially rears - jack stands or cement blocks or blocks of wood

Actually it weighs in around 3500 pound without weights, and when you pull the tires, fluids, and gas tank, it will probably be closer to 2800 pounds, give or take a little. So, for the extra work of removing the tires, hauling it to the scrapyard, your going to get closer to $280 then to $400, and that is before your time and fuel, wear and tear on your vehicle, etc.
A running WD should be worth $500 to $1000 or more, but no way are you going to get that at a scrapyard.
Somebody will need it sooner or later, keep it under cover if you can, start it every couple of weeks, keep advertising it, and it will sell. May not bring what you wanted but it will sell.

Iam in indiana and maybe interested in getting this tractor

Ya , if you don't need the money , then just cover her up and start her occasionally, some one will come and buy her . Up here in the north we are slowly getting the young guys interested , it's kinda funny how they are out scouring the country side finding tractors and keeping them a secret -- hey ! that's what we did -- it's the thrill of the chase that makes it fun !

AllisG, If you are interested in this tractor feel free to call me. My number is 812-639-3434. Thanks to everyone for all your replies.

Scrapping it may be your only option to recapture some of what you have spent. There are people responding on here that are clueless about the old tractor market these days.
That ship sailed about 3 to 5 years ago. I have sold some parts on ebay and scrapped the rest to break even. There are still plenty of WD's around and it isn't anything rare.
